Tip of the Week – Health & Safety – June 23/25

Health & Safety:  This has been a hot topic for many companies in the last decade as Safety has taken precedence over a lot of things – which is important.

There are many aspects to Health & Safety in the workplace.

One of the hardest things has been changing the culture.

Health & Safety is one of the most boring subjects to train on and have any lasting effects on people.  I have found when doing my weekly safety meetings and daily tool box talks to try and make it relatable – memorable.

How can you do that?

There are three ways that have assisted me greatly in this department.  It takes more time when preparing but it definitely leaves lasting impressions.

By utilizing short videos of true stories of things that have happened to others in similar industries or situations or by bringing humor into the mix.

People remember seeing and hearing a message that happened to someone else – it has a lasting effect and makes you change your perspective and think about things.

That is also the same when you find a joke, funny story or something humorous – by assisting someone to engage safety on an emotional level, they remember and take more notice of it.

Doing the speed limit, what do they wear when cutting the grass, protecting yourself from theft, car alarms, house alarms, keeping things clean and tidy, driving scenarios, to name a few… We do a number of things on a day to day basis at work and in our personal lives that we do not consider to be a safety aspect, but it is - it is just routine or habit or common sense.

Try and make safety relatable to people and they will see it differently.

Questions to Ponder:

How do you make safety relatable?

Is safety a priority to you and your staff?
